Plans announced for substance abuse video contest
GAINESVILLE - Lauren Markovich, former intern and the new Prevention Coordinator for the Drug Free Coalition of Hall County, is chair of the work group planning the third annual Drug Free Coalition of Hall County’s Face it…Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Video Contest.
The contest is open to groups of two-to-three youth either in middle school, grades 6–8, or high school, grades 9-12.
Students are encouraged to create "innovative and effective" substance abuse prevention video messages to their peers and the greater Hall County area.
Submitted videos must emphasize one or more of the three substances of Coalition focus: alcohol, marijuana and prescription drug abuse. Videos are to be no longer than two minutes and address one or both of the following topics:
1. A Healthy Me is Drug Free
2. Living Above The Influence of Drugs and Alcohol
Videos should be posted on YouTube, using the creators own YouTube account, and email that link to email@example.com. Deadline for submissions is March 10.
In 2010, there were 24 accidental prescription drug overdose deaths in Hall County. According to the 2010 Georgia Student Health Survey II, the average age of onset use of alcohol is 12 years of age, and the average age of onset use of marijuana is 12.6 years of age.
“In 2013, the second annual video contest, we doubled the number of video submissions from 16 to 34; our hope is to receive at least 50 video submission this year. The youth of Hall County have submitted original and thought provoking videos in the past and we expect to see amazingly creative entries again,” said JP Banks, Coalition Director.
