Starting tomorrow, the state’s best wrestlers will take one last shot at ultimate glory when the GHSA’s traditional championships get underway.

Or at least half of them will.

Classes AAAA-AAAAAA will begin two-day meets on Friday, while Classes A-AAA will get one-day tournaments underway on Saturday -- thanks to the winter weather that laid waste to the original plan of bringing all the state’s top grapplers together last weekend at the Gwinnett Arena.

Even the weather can’t derail northeast Georgia’s assault on more titles, however, and several area individuals and programs are in the hunt for glory this weekend. (NOTE: For a complete look at the 106 area wrestlers qualified for state finals this weekend, scroll down.)

Certainly the entire state will keep one eye on Jefferson’s progress, as the Dragons gun for their 14th straight traditional team title when they travel to Toombs County High to compete in the Class AA tournament in Lyons.

Jefferson has five wrestlers that will enter the weekend as No. 1 seeds, including Price Joiner (113), Chase Piperato (126), Tyler Marinelli (138), Jack Dollar (145) and Caleb Little (160). Marinelli is a two-time defending state champ that has battled injury throughout this season -- as has the entire Dragons line-up, though that didn’t stop Jefferson from claiming the AA duals title earlier this season.

Meanwhile, in Class A, Commerce will also try to sweep state crowns this season after already claiming the duals title -- and the Tigers will get to do so at home, starting on Saturday. Commerce will be a heavy favorite, with Dalton Flint (106), Mitchell Patton (113), Austin Brock (120), Trent Reddish (160), Greyson Cochran (170) and Chance McClure (220) all entering as No. 1 seeds. McClure will wrestle for a fourth straight individual crown.

Down the road in Class AAA, McClure’s close friend and sparring partner Chip Ness (195) of Buford will also gun for his fourth straight gold medal. Yet the Wolves star has plenty of company amongst his teammates as a No. 1 seed, as Jack Barber (126), Brayden Hartley (132), Trent Ferguson (138) and Rudy Guillen (145) are also No. 1 seeds. Buford will get to compete at home and will face a tough battle from a number of teams, including Area 4-AAA foe Banks County. The Wolves and Leopards have traded blows all season and this weekend could be no different. Banks County’s Chris McCrackin (113) and Phillip Dean (182) enter as No. 1 seeds.

Other area Class AAA No. 1 seeds include West Hall’s Elliott Raiford (152) and North Hall’s Caleb Hamilton (120).

In Class AAAA, Lumpkin County’s Greg Hillard (132) will enter as a No. 1 seed when his Indians travel to compete at West Laurens High, staring on Friday in Dublin.
