Gainesville street crews on 24-hr. schedule; city halts garbage, recycling pick-ups

By Ken Stanford Staff
GAINESVILLE - The City of Gainesville's Street Maintenance Division is operating on a 24-hour schedule for the next 48 hours as the city braces for the second round of this week's expected winter storm punch.

"We are handling problems as we become aware of them so the gravel/salt mixture is as effective as possible," Public Works Director David Dockery said early Tuesday afternoon. "We expect to have additional trouble spots later tonight. No particularly bad areas had been reported as of noon today."

Dockery added that the treatment for ice…scraping is "marginally effective" once ice freezes on the roadways. Our goal is to spread the Mixture and try to keep the road from freezing. We started the storm with 35 truckloads of salt and gravel and received additional supplies yesterday."

Meanwhile, the city has cancelled garbage and recycling pick-up in Gainesville the rest of the week so employees can assist the street maintenance division.
