GAINESVILLE - The Rotary Club of Gainesville named John Burd and Jame Hemmer its Man and Woman of the Year Monday night.

Burd is a former President of Brenau University and Hemmer was the first woman elected to the Hall County Board of Commissioners. Each also has a long record of community service.

In addition, Doug Carter was named winner of the Sidney O. Smith Fellowship Award and his father, Don Carter, was presented with the Guardian of Ethics Award.

Gainesville City Schools Supt. Merrianne Dyer, who is retiring at the end of the current school year, won the Lee Arrendale Vocational Excellence Award.
