GAINESVILLE - With the expected winter storm hitting the city, Gainesville police are urging the public to use the department's Facebook and Twitter accounts for non-emergency questions.

Spokesman Kevin Holbrook says "many times in weather situations people inundate dispatch/9-1-1 with simple questions or inquiries. These questions or inquiries often take dispatchers and officers away from more serious calls for service."

Holbrook says people often times do not realize the power of social media.

"We are able to reach a large amount, or an abundance of people, in a short time. It allows us to have two-way communications with the public in real time.
Communication is important in weather and hazardous situations. Please follow us on our social media accounts for the latest most up to date information."

However, he added, that it's important that calls for service or emergencies be handled through Hall County Central Communications. The department's social media accounts should not be used for emergency situations.
