White Co. High grad, UGA walk-on charged in sexual assault
ATHENS - A former walk-on player for the University of Georgia football team has been arrested in Athens and charged with the sexual assault of his girlfriend.
The Athens Banner Herald reported Jamal James Payette, 22, from Cleveland has been charged with aggravated sexual battery. The felony charge carries a prison sentence of 25 years to life in prison if there's a conviction.
The newspaper account says the victim told police Payette poured dish liquid over her, shoved her into a bathroom and ordered her to take a bath. She says he then broke through the door of the bathroom and attacked her, forcing her to strike her head on the bathtub faucet. She also told police he sexually assaulted her.
The victim told authorities she had suffered past abuse at the hands of the suspect.
Payette was reportedly arrested Monday. He remained in jail without bond, according to the newspaper.
The report said a UGA website indicated Payette graduated from White County High School and majored in Finance at UGA. He was listed as a member of the Georgia Bulldogs Scout Team in 2012.
A hearing is scheduled for February 24.
