OAKWOOD - The city of Oakwood has formally asked Hall County to apply the same fire district tax rate rollback to Oakwood taxpayers as it provides taxpayers in unincorporated parts of the county.

Oakwood City Manager Stan Brown outlined the city's request in a letter he recently sent to county administrator Randy Knighton.

"Since the rollback to unincorporated taxpayers is based on the insurance premium tax payment the County receives from the State of Georgia, the City of Oakwood will agree to forward the insurance premium tax payment we receive from the State in exchange for the same rollback for City of Oakwood tax payers," Brown wrote.

Brown also asked Knighton to let him know when the matter will be taken before the county commission "so that our elected officials and I can be present to discuss or answer any questions."

Commenting on Brown's letter, county spokeswoman Katie Crumley said Wednesday "Hall County has received the letter and has distributed it to the Board of Commissioners for their review. Any future discussions regarding Oakwood’s fire tax request would be discussed by the commission and a response and/or decision would be made by them in the coming weeks."

For several weeks now, Oakwood city officials have been discussing the matter and, at times, the possibility of forming a city fire department has been raised.

But, Wednesday morning, Brown said it's too early to begin serious consideration of that possibility.

"As for pursuing a city fire department if this is not accepted by the County," Brown said, "it’s too early to say. We would need to perform a comprehensive study to look at all options before selecting a course of action."
