Walter named to UNG Ombudsman position
UNDATED - Dr. Tom Walter has been selected as the ombudsman for faculty and staff at the University of North Georgia. UNG President Bonita Jacobs announced the appointment to faculty and staff on Tuesday.
Walter is currently serving as Vice President of Student Affairs and will continue serving in that capacity until the university identifies his successor. He will transition to the position of Ombudsman at that time. Jacobs noted in her announcement that UNG will conduct a national search for the student affairs position and will begin that process very quickly.
"Dr. Walter's background and training are well aligned with this position, which provides faculty and staff with an informal and confidential means to discuss and address issues," Jacobs said. "I am pleased that he will take on this new role with the university."
Walter began working in students affairs with the former Gainesville State College in 1989 and was named vice president for student affairs when the college consolidated with North Georgia College & State University in 2013 to become the University of North Georgia.
"I am excited about this new role because of the opportunities it presents to help others," Walter said. "An ombudsman serves in a neutral capacity to help faculty and staff members resolve conflicts and solve problems. I have been helping students in these areas for three decades and look forward to providing this kind of support for university employees."
Walter earned his doctorate in counseling and human development services from the University of Georgia in 1988 and worked for Reinhart College prior to joining then-Gainesville State College. He also served as counseling center director from 1978 to 1982 at then-North Georgia College. In addition to his administrative roles, Walter has taught courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and has been active in numerous professional and community organizations.
