Rabun deputies capture man considered 'armed and dangerous'

CLAYTON - A wanted man is back behind bars on numerous charges in Rabun County after an incident that occurred on Jan. 29.
Deputies responded to a home on Black's Branch Road in Rabun Gap for the purpose of serving arrest warrants on 26-year-old Zachariah Daniel Hooper of Lakemont for aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, battery, criminal trespass, and a parole violation advising to consider Hooper armed and dangerous.
The warrants stemmed from a dispute on Jan. 20 between Hooper and 21-year-old victim Thia Heater.
"When officers arrived Wednesday, Jan. 29, Hooper fled on foot after allegedly being alerted by Heater of the law enforcement presence," the Rabun County Sheriff's Office statement reads.
With assistance from Rabun County Sheriff's K-9 officers, deputies from the Patrol Division and Criminal Investigations Division tracked Hooper for about 3.5 miles in the wooded area north of Blacks Branch Road in Rabun Gap.
Some four hours after the incident began, Hooper was apprehended in a wooded area of Ridges of Rabun subdivision, where he was arrested without incident.
The initial Jan. 20 incident report states Heater said Hooper pointed a .22-caliber rifle at her and pulled the trigger, but she didn't think the gun went off all the way. Heater told officers she was sitting on the bed when he pointed the gun at her.
At that time, Heater was able to get away to a neighbor's house and call for help. When officers searched the house, they found a spent .22 shell casing in the floor near the bed.
Following the Jan. 29 incident, Heater was charged with obstruction of law enforcement and harboring a fugitive. The warrants charge that Heather allowed Hooper to stay at her residence while she was aware or should have known he was the subject of outstanding felony warrants. Heater also is accused of alerting Hooper to the law enforcement presence.
Both incidents remain under investigation.
