Driver escapes injury when train hits car
GAINESVILLE - While there have been plenty of close calls for motorists during this week's snow storm, one of the closest calls came for a driver in Gainesville Wednesday morning.
Gainesville City Fire Capt. Keith Smith says the motorist was driving on White Sulphur Road near Sargent Road when the vehicle slid onto the train tracks and became stuck.
"The person was trying to get the car off the track and then when they saw the train coming, they abandoned the vehicle," said Smith.
He said the train hit the car and pushed it about 300 yards down the track.
Because the car was leaking fuel, both Gainesville and Hall County emergency crews remained on the scene to make sure there was no danger.
Just before 10 a.m., the car and the train were moved from the area. Smith said Norfolk Southern will investigate the accident.
No one was injured.
