GAINESVILLE - The Georgia Department of Transportation Tuesday afternoon urged motorists to stay off of the roadways in the northeast Georgia mountains.

According to Georgia DOT District Engineer, Bayne Smith, hazardous conditions were developing in White and Union counties.

DOT Spokeswoman Teri Pope says the Lumpkin, Rabun, White and Habersham have all seen a little snow. "Georgia DOT is monitoring conditions, checking trouble spots, especially bridges, but we do want you to know that on your way home you could encounter some snow."

Workers were spreading salt and gravel on SR 11/US 129, on Blood Mountain at Neelís Gap and on SR 348 in Union County.

As is typical during any winter precipitation, SR 180 spur in Union County is closed. The road has an actual gate and lock on it.

Pope urges drivers to be cautious if they must be out to be extremely cautious. "Please slow way down, use those lower gears on your vehicle to give you more traction and anything you see that looks wet on the road is not wet - it's more than likely ice."

Pope says if you encounter ice on your commute, slow way down, ease off the brakes and gas and gently glide over the patch.
