GAINESVILLE -- The architect of Gainesville's championship defenses is now looking rebuild an entire program.

Jim Pavao, Red Elephants defensive coordinator since 2007, will become the new head coach at Fannin County, as recently announced by the Fannin County School System.

The Rebels went 2-8 last season and have not posted a winning record since 2010 when Fannin went 6-5 and reached the state playoffs.

Gainesville, meanwhile, reached the Class AAAAA semifinals in 2013 and claimed the Class AAAAA title in 2012. The Red Eelphants also finished as Class AAA runner-up in 2009 and reached the Class AAA semifinals in 2011, with Pavao playing a key role in those successes.

Pavao's defenses have allowed an average of 16.8 points per game through his seven seasons, including just 8.8 in 2009. Gainesville has been known for its swarming, attacking style under Pavao, who has employed a 3-4 base.

Fannin County has searched for consistency since 2010, which saw the Rebels cap a streak of five straight winning seasons, including three state playoff appearances.

Fannin County will compete in Region 7-AAA next season along with Banks County, Dawson County, East Hall, Franklin County, Lumpkin County and West Hall.
