No. 19 North Georgia women avoid upset loss at USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. - The No. 19 University of North Georgia women's basketball team needed overtime to fend off an upset bid from host USC Aiken as the Nighthawks prevailed 92-84 in overtime on Monday evening in USCA's Convocation Center. Mimi Hill led five players in double figures with a game-best 29 points.

The senior forward connected on 10-17 shots from the floor and completed her third double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. Cierra Jackson added 22 points, eight assists and seven rebounds and connected on 11-16 shots from the charity stripe.

Stephanie Huffman registered her fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Keeley Chester and Molly Rainwater added 11 points apiece.

Jackson and Rainwater combined to make 6-10 three-point attempts with each player connecting on 3-5 shots from behind the arch.

North Georgia (13-2, 7-1 PBC) held a 47-36 (+11) advantage on the glass and was good on 27-36 (75 percent) free throws compared to the Pacers' 14-21 (67 percent). The Nighthawks continued their unselfish play assisting on 21 of their 29 made field goals.

UNG matched its largest lead of the first half (41-33) on a layup by Huffman but USCA would score the half's final five points and trail just 41-38 at the break.

The second half saw both teams hold six-point leads at one point. A pair of free throws by USCA' Mariah Durian and North Georgia's Huffman in the final minute of play capped the scoring with regulation ending deadlocked at 79.

After the two teams traded baskets to start overtime, North Georgia would put the game away with a 10-1 run initiated by a Molly Rainwater three-pointer and fueled by six free throws by Jackson.

For USC Aiken (4-12, 2-5 PBC) Durian led three players in double figures with 25 points highlighted by a 6-8 performance from behind the three-point line.

North Georgia will continue with the third game of its four-game road swing when the Nighthawks travel to Americus. on Thursday evening to take on Georgia Southwestern State with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. The game can be heard on the UNG Nighthawk Basketball Radio Network with the Milton Martin Honda Pregame Show scheduled to air at 5:10 p.m.
