Nighthawks take out Georgia College in double OT
DAHLONEGA -– North Georgia's Corey Green and Michael Varrichione each picked a good time to tally their first double-double of the season as the forward tandem led the UNG men's basketball team to a 92-88 double overtime Peach Belt Conference victory over Georgia College on Wednesday in Memorial Hall. Green registered 17 points and 16 rebounds while Varrichione added 11 and 10 as the Nighthawks even their record at 6-6 and 3-3 in league play.
The Nighthawks seemingly had the game in hand in regulation leading by six and shooting a pair of free throws with 2:19 left in regulation but a 8-0 run by the Bobcats would flip the table before a score by Green with 38 ticks left forced the extra period.
Georgia College (6-8, 2-5 PBC) would use late heroics in the first overtime as Terrell Harris connected on a three-pointer with just five seconds remaining to erase a 79-76 deficit and force a second overtime.
After Ryan Blumenthal opened the second overtime with a trey for GC, UNG used a 9-2 run fueled by a pair of threes by Lamar Richardson to go up 88-84 with 1:34 remaining and another driving basket by Green following a loose ball scrum would ice the game 50 seconds later.
The Bobcats out-shot North Georgia 44 percent (32-72) to 36 percent (27-76) from the floor, but were out-rebounded 57-42 including a whopping 23-10 on the offensive glass.
For GC, Harris and Blumenthal finished with 23 and 22 respectively while Royal Thomas added 19.
For North Georgia, Tanzy came off the bench to add a complete line of 15 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
North Georgia returns to action on Saturday, January 18 when the team travels to Augusta to take on Georgia Regents University with tip off set for 3:30 p.m. The game can be heard through the UNG Nighthawk Basketball Radio Network with the pregame show beginning at 1:10.
