Boys basketball: Buford fends off Warriors' late charge
CLEVELAND -- White County did its best mountain climber impersonation on Saturday.
But Buford's length and strong start simply proved too tall, as the Wolves fended off a fourth-quarter charge that saw the Warriors close within eight points before falling 91-72 in Cleveland.
Thanks to its size advantage and the play of Rakim Lubin -- who finished with a game-high 23 points -- Buford jumped ahead at the start. And once they got the lead, the Wolves proved hard to handle for the Warriors, who sent Buford to the free throw line for 45 charity shots. White County attempted just 18.
Buford rolled to a 22-point lead in the third quarter -- but the Warriors refused to yield and chipped their way back into the contest, cutting the advantage to eight points before the Wolves sealed the victory.
Jordan Egerton scored 18 to pace White County -- which suffered its first region setback of the season.
Buford (8-5, 4-0 Region 7-AAA) led 49-37 at half.
White County (10-3, 3-1) will look to bounce back on Tuesday at Banks County.
The Wolves, meanwhile, will play hot to Dawson County on Tuesday.
