CLEVELAND - A Cleveland woman died as a result of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle wreck in Cleveland Thursday afternoon.

Cleveland Fire Chief Ricky Pruitt said the wreck in front of Cleveland Post Office closed Georgia Highway 75 (Helen Highway) for 90 minutes, with it reopening around 4:10 p.m.

According to Sgt. 1st Class Chad Johnson of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville, the wreck involved a Ford Taurus driven by 70-year-old Jessie Richardson of Cleveland and a Mitsubishi Protege driven by 29-year-old Roy Nichols of Cleveland.

Johnson said Richardson's Taurus was headed down Helen Highway toward Cleveland, while Nichols' Protege was headed toward Helen.

The Taurus turned left into the path of the Protege and the two cars collided head-on, Johnson said.

"White County EMS, with the assistance of two Cleveland firemen, rushed one of the people involved in the car accident to the hospital with very serious injuries," Pruitt said.

That woman, identified by GSP as 81-year-old Doris Logan of Cleveland, died of her injuries. Johnson said she was the unrestrained passenger in the left rear seat of Nichols' Protege.

Others in Nichols' car included front-seat passenger Laura Nichols and backseat passenger 6-year-old Christina Nichols, both of Cleveland.

Johnson said Laura Nichols was the granddaughter of Logan.

The Georgia State Patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation.

Citations are pending, Johnson said.
