CLAYTON - A Rabun County detention officer was fired and arrested Tuesday, charged in connection with an alleged sexual assault while on duty.

Rabun County Sheriff Frank Andrews said the Rabun County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division Internal Affairs investigator began probing allegations of sexual assault on a female who previously had been in custody at the Rabun County Detention Center.

Benjamin Fred Dailey, 25, of Mountain City, who had been employed at the Rabun County Detention Center for about four years, was placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

"Further investigation revealed that between Dec. 1, 2012, and Feb. 28, 2013, Dailey allegedly had a female inmate perform a sexual act on him," a statement from Andrews reads.

Dailey is charged with sexual assault against a person in custody and violation of his oath of office.

He was booked into the Rabun County Detention Center and, Wednesday morning, appeared in front of Rabun County Chief Magistrate Judge Albert English for a first appearance hearing and bond consideration.

Bond for Dailey was set at $40,000.

The case remains under investigation.
