Basketball round-up: Chestatee girls win; Lumpkin boys pull off comeback

The Chestatee girls basketball team edged out Collins Hill 44-42 on Saturday.

Kayla Watson paced the Lady War Eagles with 13 points, while Bridgette Kelly added 12 and Savanna Long scored 11 .

Chestatee and Collins Hill traded leads throughout, with the Lady War Eagles out-scoring Collins Hill 11-9 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Chestatee plays again at 7 p.m. Tuesday against the winner of the Jefferson vs. Oconee contest.

The Knights dropped a tough road game to perennial power Whitefield Academy on Saturday in Mableton.

Johnson was led by Carter Cagle with 20 points. Ty Cockfield scored 15. Justin Jones added 14. James Hodges chipped in 12.

Whitefield Academy was led by George Mason signee Eric Lockett with 22 points. Brandon Myles scored 17. Courtney Alexander Jr. chipped in 11.

Johnson is back in action at 7:30 p.m. Monday against South Cobb, and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. against North Cobb. Both games are at Johnson as a part of the Johnson Tip-off Classic.

The Lady Warriors (1-0) opened their season in style thanks to balanced scoring on Saturday in Cleveland.

Sophomore Jordan Taylor paced White County with 11 points, while freshman Eliza Harris added 10 points. Meanwhile, Hannah Wall, Kaitlin Wilson and Paige Thomas each scored nine points.

Rylie Vaughan had eight points to pace the Lady Indians (0-2).

The Indians pulled off a last-second comeback on Saturday in Cleveland, as Austin Holman forced a steal and scored to push Lumpkin County ahead and then hit two free throws to seal the victory with just over a second remaining.

Holman had an assist to help spark the comeback with just under a minute remaining -- before his steal and score pushed the Indians in front. Malik Anderson then hit two free throws to extend Lumpkin’s advantage. White County answered with a lay-up with 1.4 seconds left, but Holman’s free throws provided the winning margin.

Holman scored a game-high 21 points for the Indians, while Daniel McCrary added 14 points in the win.

Meanwhile, Will Gearing scored 15 points to pace White County, while Spencer Adams scored 13. Whit Mauney also chipped in with 11 points, while Joe Dockery scored 10.

Mohammed Hamilton scored 26 points, 18 in first half, while Nygel Blake added 23, 13 in first half to down the Lions on Saturday.

JB Britte scored 21 to lead the Lions (1-1), while Paul Avery added 12, and Tre Gober scored 10.

Lakeview will play again at on Dec. 2 at North Hall.

Kaylee McClendon scored 16 and Schyler Miller scored 13 to help the Lady Lions (1-1) soar to victory on Saturday.

Aaliyah Wazeeru-Din scored 8 to lead WD Mohammed.

Lakeview took a 39-10 lead at halftime.

The Lady Lions will travel to face North Hall on Dec. 2.
