UNG women's basketball takes out Shorter

DAHLONEGA - The University of North Georgia women's basketball team placed four of five starters in double figures en route to a 71-65 victory over Shorter University on the final day of the UNG Nighthawk Classic. After Shorter opened the game connecting on eight first half threes, the Nighthawk defense was able to tighten the clamps and limit SU to 2-7 (29 percent) from downtown after intermission.

Jaymee Carnes led North Georgia with 18 points, five assists and three blocks. Stephanie Huffman added 15 while Molly Rainwater and Mimi Hill added 11 and 10 respectively. Hill would register a team-best nine rebounds

All of Shorter's first 21 points came via the three point jumper as the visiting Hawks would go on to connect on 8-18 (44 percent) in the first half. Shorter's first made two-point field goal came at the 5:53 mark when Shaundrika Mann connected on a short jumper.

After a layup by UNG's Keeley Chester to start the game, Shorter would score the next 12 points capped by a pair of threes by Kristin Nash. North Georgia would respond rally to tie the game at 21 apiece before another 7-0 spurt by Shorter would give the visitors a seven-point advantage with 4:13 remaining.

A three pointer by Rainwater with 1:32 remaining would cut Shorter's lead to 32-30 at the half.

In the second half, a layup by Nash at the 11:38 mark would give the Hawks a 44-43 lead but UNG would respond with a quick 11-1 run to take a nine-point lead.

From there the Nighthawk defense would take over allowing only a single made three-pointer by Milena Sampson as the only made field goal for stretch of a 10:00 that ended in a Karisma Boykin three. The defensive lockdown would allow North Georgia to stretch its lead to as many as 14 (61-47) at the 5:28 mark.

UNG held a 43-32 advantage on the boards and would assist on 17 of their 25 made field goals.

For Shorter (1-3) Nash would end with 17 and 10 rebounds while Iesha Alexander added 14.

North Georgia (3-1) returns to action on Friday with a neutral site contest against Tusculum College. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start on the campus of Clayton State University.
