GHSA makes it official: Buford, North Hall, White, Jefferson all moving up
By Morgan Lee Editor
White County's Sam Turner, right, rushes North Hall quarterback Andrew Smith in a game played earlier this season in Class AAA. The two teams will be playing in Class AAAA next season.
THOMASTON -- The speculation is over. Buford, North Hall and White County will all be moving up to Class AAAA -- while Jefferson is jumping to Class AAA.
Lumpkin County, meanwhile, is moving down to Class AAA from AAAA after the GHSA's reclassification committee met on Monday in Thomaston to draw the lines for its members schools for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 school years.
School enrollment numbers that were released last week indicated that those moves could indeed take place, and they were confirmed by the committee -- though Stephens County did not slide down to Class AAA, remaining in Class AAAA by a narrow margin.
The GHSA will meet again on Dec. 3 to draw up the new regions within those classifications.
That could make for some interesting changes in northeast Georgia, and Region 7-AAA will change drastically, as Buford, North Hall and White County will move out of the league. Region 8-AAAA, will lose Lumpkin County, and Region 8-AA will also lose Jefferson.
Schools may opt to "play up," competing in a higher classification than their enrollment numbers. They will also have the opportunity to appeal for lateral transfers to different regions within their classification (after the new regions are unveiled). The hearing for lateral transfers will take place Dec. 17 -- before the new set-up for 2014-16 is ratified by the GHSA's executive committee on Jan. 14, 2014 in Macon.
Here's a look at some of the area's other regions and how they will change:
-- Region 7: No current members shifting classes
-- Region 6: No current members shifting classes
-- Region 8: No current members shifting classes
-- Region 8: Lumpkin County moving down to Class AAA; Lanier moving up to Class AAAAA
-- Region 7: Buford, North Hall, White County all moving up to Class AAAA
-- Region 8: North Oconee moving up to Class AAAA
-- Region 8-AA: Jefferson moving up to Class AAA
-- Region 8-A: No current members shifting classes
