DULUTH -– One night after playing arguably their best game of the season, the Gwinnett Gladiators (2-8-0-0) kept pace with the Greenville Road Warriors (4-6-0-0), but ultimately couldn’t get more past the stout opposing defense, falling 2-1 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Being outshot 23-15 entering the third period, the Gladiators had more chances than their I-85 rivals, outshooting them 11-7 in the third, and getting seven power plays to Greenville’s two. Ultimately it was Marc-Olivier Vallerand that gave the Road Warriors the win when he scored a shorthanded goal at 9:01 of the third. Gwinnett would finish 0-for-9 on the power play, while Greenville was 0-for-5.

Back in the second period, the Road Warriors had taken a 1-0 lead when Josh Nicholls scored with a redirect off his leg at 3:55. Gwinnett responded to Greenville’s early second period strike when Marshall Everson scored his first career goal by streaking along the boards and pulling up for a glove-side shot at 15:47. C.J. Lee picked up his second assist on the season with his initial lead pass to the Harvard grad.

Neither side could break through in the first 20 minutes, in what amounted to a back and forth period. Both teams finished that frame with seven shots while Gwinnett had three power plays and Greenville had two.

It was the goaltenders on both sides that put on the show over the course of the evening. Peter Delmas was making back-to-back starts for the Gladiators after winning the previous night, making 30 saves on 31 shots. On Saturday evening, Delmas stopped 28-of-30, including a penalty shot from Vallerand at 12:03 of the third. Greenville’s Jeff Malcolm did Delmas one better, however, by allowing one goal on 26 shots and picking up the victory. It was the first professional win for the Yale grad, who was making his third start of the season.

The Gladiators will play the Road Warriors once again on Monday, back at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville at 7:00 p.m. Their next home game will be on November 14th at 7:05 p.m. as they get their first look at the Florida Everblades.
