North Gwinnett wins but gets No. 3 seed in 7-AAAAAA
By staff reports
SUWANEE – North Gwinnett won the battle but lost the war Friday night in its season finale against arch-rival Peachtree Ridge.
The Bulldogs started strong and then held off the Lions 44-22 in Region 7-AAAAAA action.
North Gwinnett's win, however, was dampened by Collins Hill's comeback win over Mill Creek and a blowout win for Norcross over Meadowcreek, which forced a three-way tie and a coin flip for the region title.
Norcross would win the coin flip to take the No. 1 seed and Collins Hill was awarded second place. The bulldogs will be the No. 3 seed and have travel in the first round.
“I don't know if it's all that bad,” North Gwinnett coach Bob Sphire said. “We'll be a tough No. 3 seed but even if you're a No. 1 seed you still have to go and play well. It really doesn't matter where we are.”
North Gwinnett (9-1, 7-1 Region 7-AAAAAA) opened a 20-0 lead after the first quarter and led 30-7 at halftime. The Lions (7-3, 5-3) rallied towithin 14 points in the second half but the Bulldogs put the game away in the fourthquarter.
The Bulldogs will travel to Region 5-AAAAAA No. 2 seed Milton next week in the first round.
