Construction begins for new Dawsonville roundabout
DAWSONVILLE - The Georgia DOT began work on a new roundabout in Dawsonville Thursda ymorning. State routes 9, 53 and Dahlonega Street around the historic courthouse are part of the project.
According to DOT Communications Director Teri Pope, asphalt and concrete work are on the docket for the first day of construction, but next week the real work begins with re-striping.
The re-striping will begin Wednesday, November 13 and should take about two days to complete. Pope urges commuters to find an alternate route at this time.
"If you think of a striping truck - if you've ever seen one - it takes up a full lane width and there's actually paint coming out to stripe the new work," said Pope. "There is also a lot of hand striping that needs to go down in the area, so there will be a lot of delays."
Pope said the roads around the courthouse were almost a roundabout to begin with.
"There are several state routes that come together around the historic courthouse, and it almost forms a roundabout around the historic courthouse, but not quite," said Pope. "So Georgia DOT is going to change the striping plan and the yielding patterns."
Pope said the city of Dawsonville came to DOT in hopes of improving traffic on the state routes around the courthouse. The project has been in development for the past six months.
