CLEVELAND - A White County school bus became entangled in some utility lines early Monday morning south of Cleveland after a tree fell on a utility line and a power pole was broken.

Authorities said the incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. while the driver was picking up students on Wooten Road.

White County Superintendent Dr. Jeff Wilson said there were approximately 25 students on the bus at the time and there were no injuries.

Wilson said the bus driver did exactly as trained and kept the children on the bus. He said both the driver and the students did a great job. Wilson also had praise for Habersham EMC power crews who responded quickly.

"It was a phone line, not power lines that the bus ran into," said HEMC spokeswoman Nicole Dover. She said they were not sure exactly what caused the power pole to snap, but there were a couple of different possibilities - the tree falling on the power lines or the bus snagging the phone line. The incident knocked out service to just over 600 HEMC customers.

Wilson said there was a more minor incident involving a White County bus, as well this morning. Wilson said while turning around at one of the stops on Kanaday Road west of Cleveland, a driver backed into a fire hydrant. Wilson said no one was hurt in that incident, either.
