DAHLONEGA - The Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners announced yesterday that the county has acquired 15 acres of land from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

County Manager Stan Kelly said the land was a good fit for Fire Station number eight.

"We've had several people express concerns about rate increases on their insurance because we don't have a fire station located in that area," said Kelly. "So we felt like that would be a good use of that property."

Lumpkin County owns nearly 200 acres of the adjoining property, which used to be Blackburn State Park.

The fire station will be a volunteer station; Kelly said the county will utilize what they already have, including a fire engine. The fire engine and equipment will be stored in a shop already on site.

"It's not going to cost us a lot of money for the tax payers to have that service," Kelly said.

The station should be up and running by the end of the year.
