OAKWOOD -– West Hall held East Hall to minus-6 yards rushing and 30 points below its season average in taking a 27-7 win over the Vikings at West Hall Stadium Friday night in a Region 7-AAA matchup.

The win assured West Hall (5-2, 3-1 Region 7-AAA) of its first non-losing season since 2008. One more win will give the Spartans their first outright winning season since 2002.

“This assured us we will not have a losing season and our goals are still out there,” West Hall coach Tony Lotti said.

The win also put the Spartans in a three-way with North Hall and White County, which shocked the Trojans in Cleveland 21-7 Friday night, for second place behind No. 1 Buford.

West Hall holds its fate in its hands. The Spartans travel to North Hall next week and play host to White County in two weeks and victories over both would give them the No. 2 seed in the region for the playoffs.

While the offense was piling up over 300 total yards, the defense was clamping down on dangerous East Hall quarterback Devin Watson. The dual-threat Watson passed for 201 yards with one touchdown and one interception but was held to minus-4 yards on the ground. Perhaps more impressive was that West Hall held the Vikings (3-4, 0-4) to 0-for-8 on third downs and 0-for-3 on fourth down for the game.

“To play the way we did versus a very talented team –- I’m very pleased,” Lotti said. “The coaching staff put a good game plan together and the kids executed it.”

Four different West Hall running backs had eight or more carries and over 30 yards rushing each, paced by Tyquan Statham, who finished 98 yards and one touchdown on nine carries. Quarterback Zach English offered balance passing for 72 yards and two touchdowns.

English’s favorite target was Hunter Atkinson, who had 79 yards and two touchdowns receiving on four catches.

West Hall took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on an 18-yard TD pass from English to Atkinson. The Spartans pushed the lead to 14-0 in the second quarter on a 65-yard TD run by Statham.

The Vikings responded less than a minute later when Milton Welchel scored on a 15-yard TD pass from Watson. Welchel finished with 101 yards receiving on five catches for East Hall.

The Spartans wasted little time in adding to their lead when Ty Statham returned the second half kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. West Hall made it 27-7 early in the fourth quarter on a 43-yard TD pass to Atkinson.
