McCurry Welding Scholarship endowed at NGTC
L-R: Taylor and Tracy McCurry get a tour of the NGTC Welding facility from Cynthia Brown, Director of Institutional Advancement at NGTC.
CLARKESVILLE - Looking for a way to honor husband Chris McCurry’s passion for his business and commitment to trade, Tracy McCurry contacted Cynthia Brown of the North Georgia Technical College (NGTC) Foundation.
“Chris started his own business in 2007 because it was his dream,” McCurry recalled. “It was the welding certification that Chris achieved at (NGTC) that enabled his business grow and thrive.”
McCurry had honed his skill through a career with Kubota, and once the decision was made to go out on his own, he and Tracy both committed to the new business venture.
After passing an ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) pipe test, the requests for his company’s services increased drastically. They both knew that the company was on the brink of complete success. And then the unthinkable happened when Chris was killed in an ATV accident last fall.
On behalf of their daughter, Taylor, and herself, Tracy decided to make a contribution to create an endowed welding scholarship in Chris’s name at North Georgia Tech.
“I am so blessed to be able to make this contribution,” said Tracy. “And I’m doubly blessed to work for a company that believes in its employees and the communities.” As an employee of Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Noramco in Athens, Tracy applied for the company’s matching grant program.
Preference for the scholarship will be given to residents of Banks County, followed by residents of Habersham County. If there are no eligible applicants from these communities, other welding students will be considered.
