War Eagles rip Walnut Grove, set up showdown with Lanier
By staff reports
WALNUT GROVE – Chestatee remained tied atop the Region 8-AAAA standings after taking a dominating 27-0 win over Walnut Grove Friday night.
The defense pitched its second shutout of the season behind the play of Kalil Cantrell, Rob Minor, and Cody Humphrey along the line. Chestatee coach Stan Luttrell said the defense had exceeded expectations.
“We felt they could be good put they are doing a great job and have played lights out the last three weeks,” Luttrell said.
The starting defensive unit for the War Eagles (5-1, 3-0 Region 8-AAAA) has not allowed a single point over the past three games.
While the defense was putting the clamps on Walnut Grove (1-5, 0-3) the offense chugged along.
Zac Cheshire and Tray Bryant each scored twice for Chestatee. Cheshire gave the War Eagles the lead in the first half on a 45-yard screen pass from Wyatt Burgess.
Chestatee led just 7-0 at halftime but got things going quickly in the second half. Bryant scored on a 5-yard run to cap the opening drive of the third quarter.
Cheshire added a 2-yard TD run later in the half and Bryant finished the scoring with his second TD run of the game in the fourth quarter.
Luttrell said he thinks there is still plenty of room for improvement.
“I don’t think we have peaked yet,” he said. “They are still learning and growing and I think it shows in we’re improved with each game.”
Chestatee now turns its attention to next week, when they travel to Sugar hill to take on high-flying Lanier in a huge region battle. Chestatee is tied with Class AAAA No. 4-ranked Monroe Area and Lanier, which lost to Monroe earlier in the season, sits just one behind the War Eagles,
“That’s a huge game and Lanier is a solid team. It should be a good one,” Luttrell said.
