GAINESVILLE - The 22nd annual Medical Center Open raised $238,550 at the tournament this year, setting a new record for the tournament. The tournament has raised over $2.7 million since 1997.
The tournament was held today at the Chicopee Woods Golf Course. It had over 200 sponsors, with Bank of America Merill Lynch as the primary sponsor. 200 golfers played the tournament and 100 people volunteered.
"The tournament proceeds will help Northeast Georgia Speech Center continue in their mission to improve quality of life for children by helping them communicate effectively," said Nancy Colston, executive director of The Medical Center Foundation. "Speech, language and hearing – so important in everyday social contact – are often taken for granted. The impairment or loss of these functions can be frustrating because it prevents human expression, understanding and interaction with others.”
The tournament benefited the Northeast Georgia Speech Center and proceeds funded specialized therapy equipment for an outdoor sensory garden, an indoor sensory room and play area, a 15-passenger van and a video security system.
The check was given to the center at the 19th hole reception, which was sponsored by McGarity's Business Products/Xerox Corporation.
