TOCCOA - The Georgia State Patrol has released information about the three people facing alcohol-related charges following a pair of serious-injury wrecks in northeast Georgia Monday night.
Trooper 1st Class Casey Coffee of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa said the wrecks happened in Habersham and Franklin counties.
The single-vehicle Habersham County wreck happened on Georgia Highway 17 just north of Georgia Highway 255 (Blue Creek Road) at 11:10 p.m.
In that crash, a 2005 Jeep Wrangler driven by 37-year-old Dennis Wayne Carter of Griffin was traveling north on Georgia 17. While negotiating a curve, the vehicle traveled off the east side of the road, down an embankment, and overturned onto the passenger side, ejecting both occupants, Coffee said.
Carter, who was seriously injured, was flown from the scene to Gwinnett Medical Center.
His passenger, 19-year-old Matthew Chance Humphrey of Summerville, was injured and was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Carter was charged with driving under the influence, open container, failure to maintain lane, no seatbelt and no insurance, Coffee said.
Humphrey was charged with no seatbelt, open container and underage consumption, Coffee said.
The Franklin County wreck happened at 8:43 p.m. on Roberts Road in the Plainview community near Carnesville and involved a 1996 Oldsmobile Ciera driven by 52-year-old Karen Sue Andrews of Carnesville, Coffee said.
The Oldsmobile was traveling west on Roberts Road, a gravel road, when the car ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree with its front, Coffee said.
Andrews was trapped and had to be extricated. She suffered unspecified injuries and was airlifted from the scene to Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Andrews was charged with driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane, open container, and tire requirements, Coffee said.
