DAHLONEGA - Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has named the University of North Georgia to its annual Military Friendly Schools list. The 2014 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.

"The Corps of Cadets is a vital part of this university's heritage and its future," said university President Bonita C. Jacobs. "We are honored to count numerous service members, veterans and their family members among our students, faculty and staff and depend upon their expertise and leadership as we strive to fulfill our mission of educating leaders."

Designated by the Georgia General Assembly as The Military College of Georgia, UNG's Corps of Cadets comprises more than 800 cadets, and each year some 70 to 80 graduating cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants into the U.S. Army or the Georgia National Guard.

"Inclusion on the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools shows the University of North Georgia's commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students," said Sean Collins, vice president at Victory Media and a nine-year Navy veteran. "The need for education is growing and our mission is to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their search for schools."

In addition to its status as The Military College of Georgia and one of only six senior military colleges in the country, UNG has several initiatives aimed at assisting active duty service members and veterans:

The Veterans Success Center on the Dahlonega Campus and the Center for Adult Learners and Military (CALM) on the Gainesville Campus both serve as a one-stop shop as service members or their families enroll, register, or apply for GI Bill benefits and other financial aid. Both centers also serve as a hub for military student and veteran social activities and offer assistance with tutoring, academic advising and other services.

UNG awards college credit for military training, accepts transfer credits, and offers distance learning and online classes, all initiatives identified in the state's Complete College Georgia plans. At least two graduate degree programs, criminal justice and international affairs, are offered completely online.
UNG also is part of Georgia's Soldiers 2 Scholars program, which helps service members transition to civilian life by means of a college degree, and the 1,900-member Service members Opportunity Colleges (SOC) coalition, which provides educational opportunities to service members who had trouble completing college degrees because they moved frequently.

The Military Friendly Schools website, found at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, features the entire list, interactive tools and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences.

Now in its fifth year, the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 10,000 VA-approved schools nationwide. The survey results that comprise the 2014 list were independently tested by Ernst & Young LLP based upon the weightings and methodology established by Victory Media.

A full story and detailed list of 2014 Military Friendly Schools will be highlighted in the annual "Guide to Military Friendly Schools," distributed in print and digital format to active and former military personnel in early October.
