CORNELIA - One Alto woman was killed and another was hurt in a single-car wreck on Georgia Highway 365 near Cornelia at 11:52 a.m. Saturday.

The wreck occurred between Georgia Highway 385 and the U.S. Highway 441 South exit and involved a passenger car that struck the guardrail in the median.

Authorities say the accident occurred when a 1992 Buick Park Avenue driven by 78-year-old Eunice Ferguson of Alto traveled from the southbound right lane off into the median, striking the guardrail and coming to rest on top of it.

Ferguson died at the scene. A passenger, identified as 66-year-old Opal Shook of Alto, was transported to Habersham Medical Center for treatment.

Traffic on Highway 365 southbound was impacted for more than two hours while the wreck was investigated and cleared.

Habersham County Animal Care and Control Officer Madi Hawkins responded to the scene to pick up a dog and a cat that were in an enclosure in the front seat of the car.

While emergency personnel were on scene of the fatal wreck, a minor two-vehicle wreck occurred in the northbound lanes of Highway 365.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating both wrecks.
