Vikings offense continues rampage, as Watson puts up 6 TDs
By Morgan Lee Editor
OAKWOOD –- East Hall appears to have a pretty good grasp of this spread offense fad.
Certainly the Vikings -- and quarterback Devin Watson in particular -- are enjoying the program’s more wide-open approach to offense this season and Friday only provided more proof of that, as East Hall rolled up 552 yards in a 54-14 defeat of Johnson in Oakwood.
Watson and his receiving corps proved especially explosive, torching the Knights for 349 yards and three touchdowns through the air -- while Watson also ran for three scores to finish with six touchdowns on the night.
“The kids are ecstatic; they’re having a lot of fun right now,” said Vikings coach Bryan Gray, whose squad won its third straight – its longest win streak since 2005. “They love this offense and it shows. Right now we’re a big-play team, and the kids feed off that.”
The feeding frenzy began with the opening kickoff for the Vikings (3-1) on Friday, as Milton Whelchel took off on an 84-yard touchdown return.
Johnson (1-4) responded to knot the score at 7-7 on a 1-yard plunge from Jesse Griggs with 2:17 left to play in the first quarter – but it was all East Hall from there, as the Vikings caught fire before halftime to score 27 third-quarter points.
Edward Vergara put East Hall back in front on a four-yard scoring run to start the second quarter and Watson capped the next three drives, carrying for TD runs of one and 14 yards before lofting an 80-yard strike to Junior Lee for a 34-7 advantage at the interval.
“We did some good things tonight; the kids still made some mistakes and we have some things to work on, but we also made some good plays tonight,” Gray said. “I really thought our receivers made some great plays tonight, and the defense made some great adjustments after that first drive of theirs.”
East Hall continued to dominate in the third quarter, as Watson rolled up another touchdown run and then found Jordan Jackson on a 58-yard scoring pass for a 47-7 lead.
The Vikings’ three game-win streak includes an offense averaging 56.3 points per game -- an explosion that is sure to be tested in the coming weeks, as East Hall prepares for the meat of its 7-AAA campaign.
“We’re getting better, but we’ve got some monsters coming up,” Gray said. “Hopefully we can carry some of this momentum over.”
East Hall will play host to White County next Friday.
