Gainesville business, civic leader dies

GAINESVILLE - A Gainesville man, who held positions in national and state insurance organizations while running his own company and giving of himself to his local community, has died.

George Dobbs, Jr., was 83 when the died Thursday following an extended illness.

Dobbs was a graduate of Gainesville High School where he excelled in football and went on to play at the University of Georgia from 1948-1951.

He was a partner in the Turner Dobbs Agency in Gainesville and a Certified Life Underwriter (CLU). He was president of the American Society of CLU, the President of the Georgia Association of Life Underwriters and held many other offices in the insurance field.

Dobbs' many civic and community activities included serving as Chairman of the Salvation Army Board in Gaineville, coaching little league football, refereeing for high school football, serving on the advisory board for Young Life, and serving as president of METRO Kiwanis Club. He was an active member and deacon at the First Baptist Church of Gainesville.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am Monday at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Gainesville.
