Georgia Senate GOP Caucus meets at the islands
By Derreck Booth Editor
BUFORD - Republican State Senators in Georgia were descending on Lake Lanier Islands Wednesday and Thursday for meetings of the Senate GOP Caucus.
Senator Butch Miller of Gainesville said lawmakers spend the year honing legislation. He likened it to football.
"You wouldn't want to put a play in during the game that you hadn't run before, so before the session ever starts, you try to have your legislation as perfected as possible," Miller said.
He added that the committee process and the Georgia House also help tighten up bills during the process.
Miller expected about 35 of the 38 Republican Senators at the meetings this week, with Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and perhaps a visit from Governor Nathan Deal.
He said topics of discussion will run the gamut.
"Ethics would be a high priority item. A Race to the Top update and common core, health care issues, the election calendar changes, budget concerns and updates and there will just be a number of issues," Miller said.
Miller wouldn't disclose what bills he's working on for the 2014 general assembly, but said there are several.
