Busy afternoon for first responders in south Hall

FLOWERY BRANCH - The afternoon before the long holiday get away ended up being a rough ride for commuters and emergency responders in south Hall County.
Crews responded to wrecks on Winder Highway at Bolding Road, Union Church Road at Winder Highway, Phil Niekro Boulevard at Atlanta Highway and Union Circle and Sugarmill Road. Ponderosa Farm Road and L.J. Martin Drive made accident five, all in a short window of time.
"It was a busy day, but fortunately we were able to handle everything without very long delay," Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell said.
"Two of those involved people that were entrapped in vehicles that had to have the jaws of life either open a door or extricate them from the wreckage."
One of those happened before 4:00 p.m. at Union Circle and Sugarmill Road, injuring six people, according to Kimbrell. One of the victims refused transport from the three-vehicle crash.
The other accident involving entrapment was the Ponderosa Farm Road crash.
Gwinnett County and units from north Hall County were called in to help with transports to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
"None appear to be life-threatening. There were a couple that were fairly significant, but for the most part, just beat up and banged up," Kimbrell said.
As far as the response, Kimbrell said rescuers were able to get patients ready for transport about the time help arrived for transport.
"When it hits the fan, everybody typically kicks into high gear, and (I'm) always very proud of the way our folks handle calls."
Further to the south, motorists on Interstate 985 southbound sat in standstill or barely moving traffic during the commute. An overturned box truck lingered near Buford Drive into the evening.
