ATLANTA - The Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) board of directors Tuesday approved financing for several water-related projects in the state, including two in northeast Georgia.

The two local projects are part of the Governor's Water Supply Program (GWSP) and will receive Georgia Reservoir and Water Supply Fund loans.

The city of Auburn is financing just over $7.3 million for work on converting a rock quarry into a drinking water reservoir.

According to GEFA, the effort on the Mulberry River would give the city one million gallons of water a day and provide 1.5 million gallons a day of drought protection capacity.

The city will pay 1 percent interest on the 30-year loan.

Also in our area, Forsyth County is financing $800,000 to develop groundwater wells that officials hope will provide one million gallons of water a day.

The 20-year loan is interest free during construction and one percent following.
