GAINESVILLE - Former Gainesville High School student and NJROTC air rifle athlete Kathryn Youngblood not only made the Georgia Southern NCAA Division I Women's Air Rifle Team as an incoming freshman, but also got a one-year scholarship tied to being a member of the team.

GHS assistant principal Adrian Cromwell commented, “This is an awesome accomplishment and a true testament to the hard work, dedication, and effort [Cdr. Corey Brown and MSgt. Jack Reese] put into our NJROTC Program! Collegiate accomplishments, like Youngblood's accomplishment, are a direct result of her hard work and the program's great training & leadership!”

A total of 34 NCAA schools sponsor rifle, including a combination of coed, men’s and women’s teams, and 22 compete at the Division I level. Eight schools compete in Division I women’s rifle and 13 compete in mixed rifle.

Georgia Southern will compete in the Air Rifle discipline to start. Other Division I women’s rifle programs in the Southeast include The Citadel, The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and Ole Miss. Mixed rifle programs in the region include Wofford, NC State and Kentucky. This will be Georgia Southern's first year of NCAA-sanction shooting competition.
