Gainesville begins formalizing plans for new school
By Ken Stanford Staff
The school is planned on 17 acres in the Mundy Mill Development, a mixed-use community being built on Mundy Mill Road near Oakwood.
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Schools will begin the formal process of opening the new Mundy Mill elementary school site with a community meeting on September 12 at 6:00 p.m. at Gainesville Exploration Academy on McEver Road.
The purpose of the meeting is to prepare prospective parents and community members to form a local governance council that will work with the Board of Education to decide on the school’s magnet theme and organizational structure. The school is included in the Gainesville City Schools 2013-2023 Charter System Contract agreement and will open as a charter school.
The building site is located on 17 acres in the Mundy Mill development near Oakwood. The land was donated to the school in 2011 by developer Wendell Starke. (See earlier story. Link below.) An application for capital outlay funding for the construction will be submitted in the summer of 2014 with the anticipation of beginning construction in March of 2016.
The Mundy Mill school will serve as a choice option for parents and is expected to relieve the over-crowding at Gainesville Exploration Academy.
