Volleyball: Jefferson opens with defeat of Gainesville
The Jefferson volleyball team opened the season with a 26-24, 25-16, 25-19 defeat of Gainesville.
Gainesville jumped out to an early advantage in the first set, leading by as many as seven points before Jefferson recovered and pushed on for the win.
"We opened the match very nervous and played very tight early," Lady Dragons coach Michael Paul said. "During a time out we talked about relaxing and that things would get better. Our defense was the key to our success tonight. I am very pleased with where we are at this point."
Lindsey Nilsen produced 10 kills to lead Jefferson, while Grace Williamson had eight kills, 11 digs and an ace. Meanwhile, Olivia Przybysz set a school record with 18 digs. Abby Wood also provided seven kills and seven digs, and Paige Watson had 25 assists, three digs and three aces.
Gainesville, which is starting four freshmen and no seniors after graduating all six seniors from last year's Class AAAAA second round playoff team, played well according to coach Randi Orr.
"I'm proud of how we played," Orr said. "We're very young, but I'm highly encouraged but what I've seen."
