ATLANTA - U.S. Department of Education officials are warning that $9.9 million of Georgia's Race to the Top grand funding is in jeopardy.

In a letter to Tuesday, officials said the threat to withhold funding stemmed from the state's failure to implement a performance-based teacher and leader evaluation program.

U.S. Department of Education officials say the letter merely demonstrates the department's intention to begin withholding funding if state officials don't reach a compromise by the beginning of the 2013-14 school year.

Officials say Georgia would have until the end of the grant period September 2014 to demonstrate corrective actions if the grant funding is withheld.

U.S. Department of Education officials say Georgia would be the first state to have Race to the Top grant funding withheld.
