LAWRENCEVILLE -– The Gwinnett Braves attempted to complete their first four-game series sweep since May 23-26 vs. Toledo, but fell 2-1 to the Indianapolis Indians in a rain-shortened seven-inning contest on Sunday night at Coolray Field.

Right-hander Omar Poveda (L, 5-6) pitched well, tying a season-high with seven strikeouts, but suffered the loss as he gave up two runs on seven hits over 6 innings.

The G-Braves got off to a good start, scoring their lone run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Joe Leonard led off with a single to right, and after two outs, Poveda kept the inning alive with a single up the middle. With runners at first and second, Alden Carrithers delivered an RBI single to right field scoring Leonard from second to give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead.

Tony Sanchez tied it up in the top of the fifth as he took Poveda’s 2-1 fastball over the left-center fence for his 10th home run of the season. The Indians continued their threat, loading the bases on a double by Alex Presley and two walks, but Poveda escaped the jam by fanning Matt Hague to end the fifth inning.

The Indians took the lead in the sixth inning, collecting three hits and scoring a run. Andrew Lambo led off with a single, advanced to third on a single by Sanchez and scored on an RBI single by Felix Pie, making it 2-1 Indianapolis.

Indians’ right-hander Graham Godfrey (W, 7-6) picked up the victory, hurling 5 innings of one run ball. He allowed six hits and struck out two. Right-hander Duke Welker (S, 5) recorded the save, tossing 2 innings, allowing three hits and striking out three.

Leonard led the G-Braves offensively, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Carrithers went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Sanchez paced the Indians, going 3-for-3 with the home run, a run scored and an RBI.

The Gwinnett Braves will continue their six-game homestand on Monday night at 6:05 p.m. as they host the Durham Bulls for the first half of a home-and-home series. Right-hander Joe Bisenius (3-2, 6.17) will start for the G-Braves, while right-hander J.D. Martin (11-3, 3.02) starts for the Bulls. The radio broadcast will air on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play.
