ROCKY FACE -- A number of northeast Georgia-based golfers played their way into contention in the Georgia State Golf Association's Junior Championship on Monday at The Farm in Rocky Face.

Gainesville's Grant Lasseter led the way for area competitors at the 54-hole event, firing a 1-over 73 to move into a tie for 14th -- five strokes behind leader Ryan Stachler of Alpharetta.

The 54-hole tournament features a 144-player field and will continue on Tuesday, with a cut separating the top players after the second round.

Looking to make a move on Tuesday will be Gainesville's Spencer Ralston, who is currently tied for 35th after a first round 77, while teammate Jackson Bishop fired a 78. Lawson King also carded an 80, and fellow Red Elephant Nathan Williams put up an 81.

White County's Garrett Rowland also fired an 82, while North Hall's Hunter Young shot 84 and Lakeview Academy's John Jacobs IV carded an 88.

The top eight finishers (plus two alternates) will earn a spot on the Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match team later this summer. The winner of the Georgia Junior Championship also receives an exemption into the 2013 Georgia Amateur Championship, which takes place at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw.
