Superintendent Will Schofield opens up the school board's first-ever budget seminar
GAINESVILLE - The turnout was light for for a budget seminar conducted by the Hall County School Board Monday afternoon. Still, Superintendent Will Schofield said holding the informational meeting was the right thing to do.

While Schofield said he would have liked to have seen more people at Board Headquarters for the presentation, he said he was not completely surprised at the low attendance.

"You know, one of the things we've embraced for the last five years is trying to get as much information out as we possibly can, and so one of the things I think we can honestly say is....there aren't any shocks; I don't think people are being surprised," said Schofield.

"I think we saw today there doesn't appear to be just a huge outcry that people think that we have not shared all of the information that's out there and we're not being reasonable."

The hour and a half seminar included an outline of declining state contributions to local education, a review of rising costs for the system and testimony from two Hall County teachers who described their daily task of "doing more with less."

The FY 2014 budget does include a millage rate increase from 18.49 to 19.25. No one commented on the proposed increase at a public hearing that took place immediately following Monday's seminar.

Two more hearings are scheduled for next Monday before a formal vote on the budget takes place Monday night, June 24.

Schofield said the entire seminar will be available online so that interested parties who were unable to attend Monday's meeting can see the presentation.
