UNDATED - Power officials say nearly 70,000 customers, mostly in metro Atlanta, remained without power early Friday morning after a system of severe thunderstorms slammed into the state.

There were several reports of downed trees throughout north Georgia before dawn on Friday, as crews worked to clear debris from roads and restore power.

Georgia Power said that by 5:30 a.m. Friday, about 65,000 customers were without power in metro Atlanta, with many of them in northern suburbs that were hart-hit by the storms. Georgia Electric Membership Corp. said 3,600 of its customers were also without power in the metro area as of 6 a.m.

Statewide, Georgia Power said it had 97,000 customers without power shortly after 3 a.m. Friday.

According to Bonnie Jones, Communications Director for Jackson EMC, roughly 4,000 customers in the company’s service territory were left without electricity at the height of the storm last night as a result of damage caused by lightning, high winds, and downed trees and tree limbs.

1,449 customers were affected in Hall County, 392 in Lumpkin, 1,625 in Clarke and 635 in Jackson, she said.

Jones said there were a number of areas that saw a concentrated amount of outages during today’s storms.

Those areas are:

- The southern portion of Dawson County in the area of Old Dawsonville Highway.

- Flowery Branch, the Clarkes Bridge Road area of northern Hall County and the area near Highway 53 in west Hall County.

- The Tallahassee Road and Commerce Road areas of Clarke County.

- Jackson County, starting near Jefferson in the areas of Highway 11 and Highway 124, extending west.
