Hall tax digest down 1.5 percent
By Ken Stanford Staff
GAINESVILLE - The 2013 Hall County tax digest is about 1.5 percent smaller than last year's.
Figures provided by the county tax commissioner's office Wednesday show a 2013 digest of $5.963 billion. That compares to 2012's $6.055 billion... a difference of just over $915,000.
The biggest decrease was in residential property (the largest category), $70.5 million. The largest increase was in motor vehicles, $25.1 million. There were decreases in all but four of the classes of property used by the county in determining the tax digest.
News of the decrease in the tax digest comes as the county continues the process of finalizing the budget for the coming fiscal year which begins July 1.
Monday, Hall County Schools Supt. Will Schofield referred to the decrease as the school board discussed increasing the school tax rate from 18.94 mills to 19.25 mills.
"A little bit of a surprise we got last Friday was an additional 2.5-percent drop in the local property tax digest," Schofield said Monday. That represents about $1 million in lost revenues.
