SUWANEE - A piece of 20th century world history is on display in Suwanee, waiting on the highest bidder next Saturday. A 13 feet tall, 8000 pound section of the Berlin Wall is positioned in front of city hall.

It's drawn some attention from passersby and even city employees.

"(I) came across a co-worker who had taken the day off, and she was taking a photograph of her parents in front of the Berlin Wall."

City Public Information Officer Lynne DeWilde said Auction Management Company selected Suwanee to temporarily display the piece because of its interest in public art.

DeWilde said the side of the piece facing city hall is just the gray shade of concrete. That's the side that faced the east when the wall stood in Germany.

The outward facing side is colored with graffiti that depicts a building with people and an American flag. That's the side that faced the west in Berlin.

Dewilde said next Saturday's auction will sell the chunk to the highest bidder with no reserve. While the city won't bid on it, DeWilde said it doesn't mean they won't accept it.

"We've told several people who have asked, that it sure would be wonderful if there were a business or people in the community, an organization, that would like to purchase it and donate it to the city."

As far as moving the piece when it's sold, DeWilde said she understands the four-ton responsibility goes to the new owner.

She said you can bid in person or online via a webcast. The auction starts at 4:30 p.m.
