BRASELTON - The Georgia Department of Transportation announces the beginning of the end of work on the SR 211 at SR 124 intersection improvement project in Braselton. If weather cooperates, all new lanes will be open for use by Friday night.

“(Thursday) afternoon, crews will start the work to get traffic into the final configuration. First traffic will be split to run on each side of the median with one lane open in each direction. Then crews will pave the lanes closed to traffic. Traffic will be moved into the newly paved lane so crews can pave the second lane in each direction. Our contractor plans to have all lanes open by sundown Friday. We are thankful to get these improvements in place. Please be patient and use caution driving through the area as these changes take place over the next 2 days,” explained District Construction Engineer Harold Mull.

There will be daytime lane closures next week to finish up the medians and shoulders. Punch list work will continue until completed. Any necessary lane closures will occur during the day.

When completed, the intersection will have right- and left-turn lanes on each leg of the intersection. Dual left-turn lanes will be built on SR 124 east towards the interstate and on SR 211 south towards Braselton. Two through lanes and sidewalks will be build for SR 211 and SR 124. New signal equipment will be installed and allow the traffic signals at the interstate ramps to be timed with the signal at the intersection of SR 211 and SR 124.

The intersection improvement project was awarded to C.W. Matthews Contracting Inc. for an estimated contract cost of $5.2 million. The project’s completion date was May 10, 2013.
