The Hall County School Board heard Monday that teacher retirement and health insurance will cost an additional $3.2 million in the coming year
GAINESVILLE - Hall County School Superintendent Will Schofield told school board members at their meeting Monday that they should get ready for another year of cutting costs, since the system will be paying more for teacher health insurance and retirement in the coming year.

Schofield said he anticipates an additional outlay of $3.2 million in FY 2014 for increases in teacher retirement fund contributions and health insurance costs.

The board did receive good financial news on a couple of fronts Monday, including a report that a new telecommunications plan will save the school system almost $672,000 in the coming year. Schofield said that's a step in the right direction.

"Every place that we can save a few hundred thousand dollars, using LP instead of diesel [for school buses], that we can outsource custodial instead of employees that work for the Hall County School District...any of those areas that we can find means more money for teacher pay, more days of school for children," said Schofield.

Despite the anticipated additional costs, Schofield said the last thing he wants to do is impose furlough days.

"We're going to continue to look at ways to become more efficient," said Schofield. "Our goal is to go to school more days in this coming year than we did this year."

Schofield told board members he did not see a reason to get a presentation from the Hall County tax appraiser until the county had a clearer idea of just how much revenue would be generated by property taxes. Tax assessments went in the mail earlier this month.

The Hall County School Board will begin working on a budget for FY 2014 in May.
