Spring sports take front and center with culmination of hoops

OAKWOOD -- With the culmination of the basketball season over the weekend, the focus will now turn for good to spring sports for local and area high schools.

Baseball is in full swing and most everyone will begin playing region games this week.

Region 7-AAA will open region play Monday with several good matchups, including East Hall traveling to Buford and West Hall playing host to Dawson County.

Region 8-AAAAA will open its region schedule on Friday, including a huge early-season matchup between top-ranked teams Gainesville and Winder-Barrow on Friday. The Elephants are ranked No. 2 in Class AAAAA.

Local golf teams will get their first good look at each other with the Hall County Championships teeing off Monday and Tuesday at Royal Lakes Country Club.

The Gainesville boys and girls teams are the defending champions.

Tennis and track and field are also cranking up their seasons as is soccer.

Two big soccer matchups locally will the Gainesville boys traveling to Chestatee and North Hall traveling to Flowery Branch on Tuesday.
